Puna de Atacama

The Puna de Atacama is a region of the Andes that holds the highest concentration of six-thousand-meter peaks. Located in Chile’s Atacama Region, extending from Copiapó into the high Andes, it is a land of vast diversity—lagoons, salt flats, wildlife, and towering mountains. In this extraordinary setting, three professional trail runners set out to retrace the legacy of the Chasquis, the ancient messengers of the Inca Empire during the 13th and 14th centuries. Through a relay-style journey spanning nearly 150 kilometers, from 2,600 meters to 6,893 meters above sea level, they ran for three days across extreme terrain to reach the summit of Nevado Ojos del Salado—the highest mountain in Chile and the highest volcano in the world.
